Dr. James K. Bailey, III is the phenomenal Pastor of Sweet Savior church and an outstanding Executive Administrator at Whites Creek High School within the Metropolitan Nashville Public School District. Most importantly he is a dedicated family man. On June 5, 1993, he wedded Shemika Hambrick-Bailey, who works diligently in service along with her husband. Out of this union they have two beautiful daughters Ja'Mika and Ja'Mecia Bailey who are both college graduates.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from American Baptist College with a major in Bible and Theology and a minor in Church Vocations. He has also earned his Master of Education degree from Tennessee State University in Curriculum and Instruction, Specialist in Education degree from Middle Tennessee State University, and Doctorate of Education from Walden University.
His ministry and philosophy of education reaches outside of his church and crosses over into his role as Educator and Administrator.
Dr. James Bailey began his career in the Metro Nashville Public School District in 2003, as a 7th grade teacher at Jere Baxter Middle School. His unique style and talents as a classroom teacher were recognized very early. After three successful years as a classroom teacher with outstanding student achievement and educational value added to students, he was assigned administrative duties as a Program Assistant.
In 2008, Dr. Bailey was promoted to the position of Dean of Students at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School. Very shortly thereafter, he was promoted again to the position of Academy Principal of the Business and Communications Academy where he continued to positively impact students’ achievement. At the end of his third year at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School, he was recognized again for his unique style and talent and was reassigned to Hillsboro High School.
During his tenure at Hillsboro High School, he made a sizable and noticeable difference as the International Business and Communications Academy Principal. Dr. Bailey’s ability to foster an atmosphere of collaboration proved to be effective as he worked feverishly to reduce his academy’s failure rate. The failure rate decreased from 82% in 1st nine weeks, to 68.6% in 2nd nine weeks. Moreover, he designed a strong student attendance intervention plan that has helped improve overall student attendance from 91.45% in 2010-2011, to 94.12% within one school year. Without question, the success of the International Business and Communications Academy is a direct result of Dr. Bailey’s tireless efforts, careful planning, and the close data study of the Academy team.
As a result of his reputation for being an ardent and courageous leader with a proven record of success, Dr. Bailey was promoted to Executive Principal at Whites Creek High School (WCHS) in 2012. Within just one school year Dr. Bailey has made a tremendous impact on student achievement, and fostered an environment conducive for learning. His accomplishments in just one school year include improving the attendance rate from 88% in 2011-2012 prior to his tenure to 92% 2012-2013; increasing the Literacy Tennessee Value Added Assessment System (TVAAS) student achievement growth scores from a 1 to 3 on a five point scale; meeting 3 of the 5 academic targets set by the State of Tennessee; and supporting a safe and nurturing environment by decreasing discipline issues from the previous year by a staggering 557 referrals to the office. 2013-2014, he increased the Literacy Tennessee Value Added Assessment System (TVAAS) student achievement growth scores from a 3 to 5 on a five point scale. One of Dr. Bailey’s most notable impacts as a visionary leader at WCHS was the rigorous approval process the school went through to earn the right to be a part of the University of Cambridge family. WCHS is now a member of the Cambridge International Examination educational program. The rigorous program is designed to support high-quality educational performance, develop successful students, and support the economic performance of countries at the national level. Additionally, teachers at WCHS receive excellent support from Cambridge with curriculum guidance, teaching and learning resources, training and professional development.
Moreover, Whites Creek High School has received many notable awards of recognition. In 2013, Whites Creek received the Tennessee Governors Environmental Stewardship Award for Whites Creek students using their own blend of biodiesel to drive through the state of Tennessee, stopping along the way to teach kids about alternative energy. The same year, the Community Health Academy became a “Model” academy, demonstrating proven classroom success incorporating real world application that increases student achievement. The Academy of Alternative energy joined those ranks as a “Model” academy the following year. The successes of the Academies at Whites Creek is shown as WCHS led the district with 260 Dual-Enrollment College credit hours earned by students in the 2014-2015 school year. To date, all three of the Thematic Academies at Whites Creek have received “Model” status by the National Career Academy Coalition.
Dr. Bailey’s dedication to the education of all children, his leadership style, and innovative ideas led to his nomination as The Academies of Nashville Academy Principal of the Year 2011-2012. This annual award recognition ceremony is produced by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. Nomination for Executive Principal of the Year 2015-2016. Most recently, he was named the 2016-2017 Executive Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association. His outstanding leadership ability has also been dually noted by Mayor Don Fox in Lebanon, Tennessee, who awarded Dr. Bailey with the "Key" to the city of Lebanon. Dr. Bailey was also awarded the "Key" to the city of Gallatin, Tennessee. Additionally his perseverance and unbreakable fortitude in the community and in his congregation was recognized by the Tennessee House of Representative with a Proclamation.
